IR-01-101123 Iridium FX2600 Fax Adapter, old part# FXUG0703
The Iridium Fax Service (FX2600) allows faxes to be sent or received from a Group 3 fax machine located anywhere in the world.
Connects over the Iridium Network, to another Group 3 fax machine connected to the PSTN or an Iridium phone. Operational overview What is it?
The fax adapter is located next to a standard Group 3 fax machine and connects to it through an RJ-11 phone cord and, in turn, connects to the Iridium phone through a standard serial port.
During transmission the fax machine sends the fax to the adapter which buffers it before sending it over the Iridium network to the Iridium U.S. gateway.
From there the fax is sent to the recipient. For mobile-terminating faxes the call flow is reversed, with the server buffering the fax before it is sent over the Iridium network to the fax adapter.
Why do you need it?
The adapter is designed for worldwide service in the same rugged and remote conditions in which Iridium users typically find themselves and supports multiple languages including: Chinese, Taiwanese, Thai, Japanese, Korean, Arabic, French, Spanish, and Portuguese.
It supports buffering faxes up to 10 pages and operates cost-effectively at high resolution to ensure that character-based scripts are accurately transmitted.
The below diagram highlight the fax call flow.
The Iridium Fax Service allows a fax to be sent or received anywhere in the world, via a Group 3 fax machine connected to an Iridium phone.
The Iridium Fax solution is divided into two key components: The Fax Adapter and the Fax Server. The Fax Adapter is a small hardware device that operates as an intermediary between a Group 3 fax machine and an Iridium phone (ISU or LBT). The Fax Server is a store-and-forward platform located at the Iridium Gateway in Tempe, Arizona. The Fax Server brokers transmissions between the Iridium Network and the PSTN network.
The Fax Server uses mobile terminated SMS messages to communicate with the Fax Adapter. The Fax Adapter issues commands to the phone that cause inbound SMS-Mobile Terminated messages to be redirected out the phone’s data port to the Fax Adapter, rather than being shown on the phone’s display. For this reason, the user will not be able to receive SMS-Mobile Terminated messages on the phone’s display when the Fax Adapter is connected to the phone.
If the user disconnect the Fax Adapter from the phone, he / she have to reconnect it if he / she want to be able to receive mobile terminated faxes.
Because the Fax Adapter utilizes the data port on the phone, Fax service and Data services cannot be used simultaneously.
Mobile Originated faxes can be sent either from Iridium Sattelite Unit to PSTN or from Iridium Sattelite Unit to another Iridium Sattelite Unit. In either case, faxes are limited to a maximum of 10 pages.
Fax machines are configured to work correctly in the country in which they are sold. The Fax Adapter, by default, is configured to work correctly with North American fax machines. The Fax Adapter configuration can be changed to support fax machines from the following countries:
Australia, Belarus, Brazil, Canada, China, Cyprus, Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, Iceland, India, Indonesia, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Korea, Mexico, New Zealand, Norway, Pakistan, Philippines, Portugal, Russia, Singapore, Spain, Taiwan, Thailand, Turkey, UAE, UK, USA and Vietnam
